Unplug from Civilization

There are times when we'd all like to become hermits and shut out the world. The solitary, Thoreau-like life has its appeal — especially after a morning of back-to-back meetings or chauffeuring a half-dozen ten-year-olds. Well, if you can't make it to Walden Pond just yet, here's a mini-escape that might restore you in place.

  • Put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on your door. Turn on your voicemail or answering machine or — if you don't have either — take your telephone off the hook. Turn off any distractions: television, radio, stereo system, cell phone, computer, pager, and all of the lights.
  • Light a pine-scented candle, if you can (or close your eyes and imagine the smell of a wood-burning fire).
  • In your mind's ear, hear the rain on an old tin roof — or perhaps the haunting song of a barn owl. Listen to the wind as it rustles the leaves — and breathe. For a few moments, enjoy your "cabin in the woods."
If you're not adept at visualization, try listening to Shakti Gawain's Creative Visualization audiotape, which will guide you through the process. Or, instead of visualizing to unplug from civilization, use the quiet time for silent prayer or meditation. All three methods can bring about relaxation.
