Acknowledge Generosity

When we do not receive what we wish or expect from those close to us, it is easy to dismiss an intended kindness. If it's not exactly what we were looking for, we might brush off the gesture, depriving ourselves of a gift.

  • Try recalling all the kindnesses that have come into your life in the past few weeks. Perhaps someone remembered your birthday, or wished you well on a project, or inquired about your health? Maybe a colleague invited you to lunch or brought you a cup of coffee. Did anyone pinch-hit for you, taking something off your plate? Did a friend call to trust you with a secret or share a joyful experience? Were you surprised by a compliment or words of admiration? Maybe someone shared information or made a referral to you? Write down any kindnesses that come to mind.
  • If you have not yet done so, stop now to acknowledge each "gift."
Focus on what's missing and life seems bare. Focus on what you've been given, and a rich, full life appears.
