How Much Should I Tip? A Holiday Tipping Guide

During the holiday season, it's customary to tip service people who have provided you and your family with exceptional service throughout the year. But who deserves a tip, and how much should you give them? What companies forbid their employees to accept cash gifts? Do you have to tip everyone? Read on for answers to all your tipping questions.

Nanny: One Week's Pay

A nanny or au pair should be tipped one week's pay, and will probably also enjoy a homemade gift from your kids.

Babysitter: One Night's Pay

Unless your babysitter has provided truly extraordinary service over the course of the year, an appropriate tip is equal to one night's pay.

Day Care Providers: Cash and a Gift

As with a nanny, it's customary to give both a gratuity and a small gift to a day care provider who works closely with your child each day. The amount can vary; the Emily Post Institute recommends tipping your day care provider anywhere from $25-$70.

Teachers: Gifts Only

Tutors and Music Teachers: Cost of One Visit
