Environmental Buzz Word: Ecosystem
Brought to FEN by National PTA®
An ecosystem is a community of living things (plants, animals, people, bacteria, fungus) that interact with one another and their physical environment (air, water, soil, sunlight). Deserts, forests, lakes, and prairies are all examples of ecosystems.
The concept of an ecosystem is important because it shows that everything in the environment is related to everything else. If one part of the ecosystem is disturbed or polluted, the entire ecosystem can be affected. For example, in a forest ecosystem, if too many trees are cut down, soil may erode, and animals and birds may lose their habitats.
