Family Fire Drill

by Patricia Mandell

When is the last time your family held a fire drill? "The truth is, it's very rare to meet somebody who has actually practiced a home escape plan," says Meri-K Appy, assistant vice-president for public education at the National Fire Protection Association, a nonprofit organization that advocates for fire safety.

Despite the fact that 80 percent of fire deaths occur in the home, most people believe that is where they are safest, an NFPA study shows. Almost half of Americans never even test their smoke detectors, let alone buy fire escape ladders. With Fire Prevention Week coming soon, why not take the time to teach your family some fire-safety practices?

A fire can ignite rapidly. There may only be several minutes in which to make a safe escape. Teaching your children exactly what to do in case of fire could someday save their lives. Holding a fire drill teaches a life skill every bit as important as buckling a seat belt.
