Make a Bat Mobile

by Christine Dvornik

The thought of turning your house into a bat cave has probably never crossed your mind -- until now! But what's a bat cave without a few bats "hanging" around? Here's how you can make your own:

You'll need these materials:

  • Stapler
  • Small scissors
  • Toilet-paper or paper-towel tube
  • Black poster board
  • White felt or plastic eyes
  • Black tempera paint (or another color of your choice)
  • Paintbrush
  • A piece of string
  • Tape

Step One   Flatten the cardboard tube, then cut an upside V out of one end. Now your bat has ears.

Step Two   Next, flatten the other end and staple it closed -- about 1 inch from the bottom.

Step Three   Cut a moon shape in the stapled end. This will be the bat's tail.

Step Four   Paint the tube black -- unless you want your bat to be another color! Let the paint dry completely.

Step Five   Measure your poster board, and cut out a foot-long piece. Then, cut it into a wing shape something like this: VVVVVVVVVVV

Step Six  Staple the wings across your bat's body.

Step Seven   To make the eyes, cut out two small circles from the white felt. Then draw a black dot in the middle of the circle. Glue them onto the bat's head where you think they look good. Or, if you've got plastic eyes, just glue them on.

Step Eight   Now, let your bat relax. Staple the string to the bat's back and tape it to the ceiling of your room.
