Help for a Teen Who Can't Read
Question: My 19-year-old niece has recently come to live with me and I've just learned that she can't read -- her abilities are way below second grade. I am shocked at her mother for letting this happen. My niece is very eager to learn, but she only wants me to teach her; she is very shy and very, very ashamed of this. I have been building her confidence slowly and we are ready to start. What books or course of study does she need?
Answer: I suggest you start by visiting websites designed to help adult learners. Here are two to get you started:
1. National Institute for Literacy
2. National Center on Adult Literacy
Good luck!
