Healing by Killing (Ripui B'Hereg)

Rating:No Rating
Genre:Documentary
Release Date:April 22, 1998
Running time:90 minutes
Director:Nitzan Aviram

Description: Co-sponsored by the Museum of Jewish Heritage and inspired by New York psychologist Robert Jay Lifton's book Nazi Doctors, this documentary by Israeli director Nitzan Aviram begins with Hitler's 1939 euthanasia order, explores early Nazi euthanasia experiments, the writing of false causes of death certificates, forced sterilization by the Nazis, and various justifications and rationalizations by the German medical establishment. Although public pressure closed euthanasia centers, this groundwork set up efficient and secret practices and procedures which were in place prior to the Final Solution. The film raises questions of medical ethics relevant to contemporary issues (forced sterilization, genetic engineering, abortion, capital punishment). Interviews include author Lifton, a former prisoner recruited as Dr. Joseph Mengele's medical photographer, an Auschwitz doctor, and other medical workers from the camps. Made with a video transfer to 16mm.~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide
