  Your Child, Ages 12-18

Teenaged girl writing

Dear Parents,
April is Alcohol and Drug Awareness Month. Take a quiz to find out how much you know about teen drinking, and find strategies for talking about alcohol with your teen. Also, get the facts on drug abuse among kids in high school and in college.

Raising teens takes finesse. Teens are independent, but you can still teach them to make good decisions. If you set high expectations for your teen, it's likely you'll be surprised how often they're met. But trust your intuition if you think something is wrong.

School policies are constantly changing. Get the facts about hot-button issues like school uniforms, religion in the classroom, and high-stakes testing.

We don't discuss it. They'll definitely
say "no" if offered a drink.

I'm sure they'll try a few beers now
and then -- it's a rite of passage.

They know they're in big trouble if we
 catch them drinking!

We talk openly and often about the
dangers of alcohol and also limit our
 own drinking.
