Your Child 12-18

Smiling girl

Dear Parents,

Is your teen planning to get a summer job? First, make sure your teen is ready for a job, and knows what types of jobs to avoid. Then, find tips to help your child ace the interview and be a great employee.

Earning an income presents a great opportunity for teens to learn about money. Stress the importance of making regular contributions to a savings account, and prepare your kids for the reality of income taxes. With all the material temptations for teenagers these days, learning how to be a smarter consumer is critical.

A summer job can also be the first step on the road to a rewarding career. Your teen's plans for the future aren't set in stone, but it can't hurt to start researching possible careers now.

"My 13 year old daughter doesn't have any friends at school. We recently moved to a new state, and although she is a warm, smart and sensitive person, she hasn't made any new friends. She had throngs of friends at her old school, and is now completely miserable. I'm not sure how to help her." —Phyl
