Dear Parents,

Thanksgiving is a special time to get together with family and friends and enjoy a good meal and shared stories. Plan ahead to allow more time for fun and games, and make sure you remember to show gratitude for all the good things in life.

Building a foundation for interacting with your child's school involves two-way communication, realistic expectations, and parents and teachers giving each other the benefit of the doubt. Even busy parents can find ways to get involved, especially when a school has an open door policy.

As the temperature drops, the popcorn pops at local movie theaters. Once you've worked out your entertainment budget and have learned how to decode the movie rating system, find out about the latest new releases your family may enjoy. Also in this issue, test your knowledge of past blockbusters, and discover some of our favorite animal movies.

Join in this discussion on our Message Boards about a 7-year-old failing because he won't finish work:

"I too have a child (7 years old) who is failing simply because he is not doing the work at school. I know he can do the work because we do the exact same work at home...So I have concluded that once my son leaves his reading group with his teacher, she gives them work assignments to complete on their own, but my son just gets distracted and off task. I think he needs someone who is firmer who will stay on him about completing his work...."
