Introverted Parent-Extraverted Child

When an Introverted parent raises an Extraverted child, it is often the parent who feels inadequate and energyless. Introverted parents say, "This child is sucking the life from me!" An active preschooler who wants constant interaction with mom can push the Introvert beyond her limits to the point of suddenly exploding, surprising them both by her quick change of demeanor. Introverted parents may criticize older Extraverted children for what they consider "unnecessary talking," whether in the car or watching a movie.

Extraverted children often describe an Introverted parent as too distant. The parent may be physically present but so lost in his or her own thoughts that the child finds it hard to break through and get his or her attention. Extraverted children also report worrying about an Introverted parent's isolation. The child may feel torn when accepting a social invitation knowing it will leave mom at home alone. Extraverted children want their parents to have friends, belong, and be with them as part of a group.

On the plus side, Extraverted adults say they appreciate the distance and privacy their Introverted parent gave them during the teen years.
