Are Parochial Schools Okay?
Q: I am concerned about my children's education and I would like to know what you think. My oldest son is currently attending a Catholic parochial school (he is six years old) and I want to know how this will affect his future education. I have been told that this type of school is not really the best for him, but I feel that it is better than the public school system in Yonkers. Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated - thanks.
A: Parochial, private and public school education can all benefit kids. I have seen many college students and adults who are the product of fine parochial school education. Since I don't know what the concerns are of the parochial school naysayers you referred to, I cannot participate in that dialogue.
If you have evaluated all schools and decided this school will best educate and care for your son, then stand firmly behind your decision. If this school is not living up to its promise, you, as an involved parent, will soon become aware of this and make the appropriate adjustments. Your son's future education is on a fine course as long as his teachers encourage a love of learning, provide a stimulating, challenging curriculum, and respect your son's efforts.
