Childhood obesity is a serious issue, because too many pounds can cause major health problems in children and adolescents. If your child is overweight, a weight-loss camp may help him slim down and develop healthier habits. 1. How do I know if my child needs to lose weight?

Obesity is not in the eye of the beholder; it's not up to you to decide if your child needs to lose weight. Some children may worry about being ridiculed by friends and schoolmates as "the kid going to fat camp." Tell your child that weight-loss camps typically offer an array of fun summer activities, just like any other camp. Tell him that he'll have many fun summer camp stories to share with friends – stories that don't include any hint of attempts at weight loss.

3. How do I know which camp is right for my child?

It's simple: do your research! Your primary concern should be safety: Make sure that the camp officials are trustworthy and have an excellent track record. The camp staff should include medical doctors and nurses, certified nutritionists, and mental health professionals. Inquire about the weight-loss program, and make sure it is flexible enough to meet your child's specific needs. Also, make sure that a strong support system will be provided: The program shouldn't be just about weight loss – building your child's confidence and keeping him happy should be important summer goals. Finally, ask whether the program can be adapted to everyday life, so that your child can keep up his newfound healthy habits throughout the year. Some camps offer counseling even after the summer session ends.
