Take a high-speed ferry from San Pedro, Long Beach or Newport Beach to the beautiful island of Catalina. Rent a golf cart (the only approved mode of transportation on the island) and travel around the hills. Tour the Wrigley mansion, walk the beautiful gardens, view the wildlife preserve - there are buffalo and deer on the island, and a large variety of sea life.
There are shops and restaurants galore for all tastes and budgets.

Other comment or suggestions:
Take a submarine cruise, go snorkeling; rent tandem bikes. There are several parks and playgrounds on the ocean, for a relaxing break from touring and shopping, or to just give the little ones a break!
