Description of technique:
It won't make me popular here, but I confess to being a bully! I would single out kids at school and subject them to a range of bullying - mainly verbal, occasionally physical.

I can't remember when I started, but certainly carried on until I was 8 years old.

I remember a number of incidents, but one in particular springs to mind. This was one of the last....

There was a boy called Neil in my class. I don't know why I didn't like him, but I singled him out - I'd do anything I could to make life difficult. One day I hit him - quite hard - reduced him to tears etc.

Later that day, when I was at home Neil and his mother arrived at our house. Neil's mother and my mother had a talk. Neil and his mother were shown inside. My mother found me, and took me into to talk to Neil. His mother told me how much I had upset him. I looked to my mother for support, and got none! I was told in short order to apologize. Neil and his mother were sent on their way, having been told to come back if there were any more problems.

This was the 70s, before modern day parenting... I ended up with a very sore backside courtesy of my mother's slipper.

Neil lived in peace from my bullying.

Moral of the story - confronting the bully's parents may well be worthwhile. It will depend on the parents' reaction - in my case my mother knew I wasn't al sweetness and light.

Later on, as a teenager I saw the horrors of bullying at school, not giving it, or receiving it, but as a bystander. I regret to say I did nothing to support those being bullied.

Age group this technique is effective for:
Elementary School
