Description of technique:
Counter-bullying by bullying victims or ignoring the abuser rarely works. Instead of trying to teach children how to be better victims, the focus should be on teaching offenders the value of treating others with dignity and respect. However, the success of this approach is often dependent upon the skill and background of individual teachers. Because 25% of educators in the U.S believe that bullying and peer abuse is a normal part of growing up, there is the risk that the commitment or ability may not be present. But there is hope for kids. There are educational resources available for schools that are affordable, practical and most important ... effective.

It is vital that kids be taught to respect others instead of abusing each other for fun. In my experience, it is also important to begin teaching these values early in schools. My son was teased and taunted in the early years of elementary school and by the time he reached high school the stigma of being a victim caused him to become the constant victim of more violent and dangerous abuses.

The bottom line is that it is up to us adults to help kids who do not know how to help themselves. The price that children pay when we do not help is far greater than the effort it takes to help them.
Remember, kids hope that you will help stop peer abuse.
